im considering putting nitrous on my h2 dragger, and was wondering if the nitrous controlers that are available from schnitz or others work well out of the box, or does it take a lot of dicking around to get them to work? also do you have any preferance on two steps, or such? so far, i have no electronics at all. its shift like a dirt bike, so if im going to invest in new gear i want it to be in equipment that others are happy with! thanks a lot!!

I don't NO2 but I have drag buddies who do. One thing I can tell you for sure is to start small and work your way up slowly (single stage..dual stage...etc..). Also, there's a lot of information on the internet on how to use controllers. Search under 'drag racing', 'NO2', etc....

I agree to use a single simple non progressive system first.
When I started with nitrous 1986 I went directly to a dual stage system with a high pressure pump and regulator return line. That was a mistake and I lost at least a season in development. I did a best of 8.62 with the small tire bike. Two years later when I had the big tire bike a friend run the other bike with a stock NOS single system. He had used the bike without nitrous with a 858cc engine and run 8.80 ( better than Paul Gast ever did on the same bike ). As he was running the bike in Pro Stock with nitrous we put in my first stage 3 (from 1983) 792cc and #25 nitrous jets. He did 8.50 160, better then I ever did with the dual stage (on that bike).
I have tried single stage, dual stage, single stage with progressive, dual stage with progressive second stage. The best et was with the single progressive (8.01 1999) but already in 1993 I did 8.05 with a single stage directly on the throttle switch. I don´t like the progressives as they function today. FBG has a new one that might work better (separate circuits for the two solenoids allowing for separate settings to avoid leanouts during pulsing). As the Pro Stock rules in Europe has no limits in nitrous set up (pro mod allows only single stage)I will try a three stage system next year (limited time to race)with the first off the throttle, second with a timer and third with a switch activated by the shift arm at the shift to second. I probably have to put in a Pro Mod gear box (Z1 case) for the second gear to hold. The slider will slip at the shift point to avoid wheel spin. The smaller solenoids used does not leak as frequently as the larger ones required to run large jets in a single stage. I think the hp can be doubled with nitrous. I hope to prove that some day on the strip but my racing will be limited to two races a year due to work abroad.

as far as et goes, i would hope to run maybe 8.60s or 70s with the juice. the main reason im considering after market ignitions is to run a two step, and rev limiter in case i miss a shift. (boom) it would also be nice to have a shift light. if a guy were to run a single stage without a controller, would it be best to have it come on off the line, or with a microswitch on the shift to second? also, does the extra mph require a gearing change? or does the nitrous let the motor rev higher inherently?

I am running the MSD system on my nitrous bike, it is being used by several racers with good success, it has rev limiters, programmable ignition curves, shift light, etc, costs about $800 and you have to fabricate a signal rotor and a mounting plate.
My best time with a single stage, no progressive, nothing really fancy was an 8.41, that was about three months after I bought the bike, it had been running in the 8.20-8.30 range fairly consistent with rather large nitrous jets.

I am going to use a Schnitz progressive controller next year with much larger jets but that will come only after sorting out some of the other systems. Hopefully the data logger will give us some tuning information on jetting and gearing.

You should change the gearing and probably the clutch tune up for nitrous, you will be making much more HP and you will notice the difference. The week link in the tranny has always been second gear, if you push the tranny real hard you will hurt it. One of Neville's Heavy Duty second gears may be in order. It will depend on just how hard you are pushing the bike, and 8.60 is fairly hard.

Well to go 8.60's all you will need is a dyna ignition and single stage and a slider and lots of patience.But trust me as soon as you get to your goal you will want to go faster. That is when it can get expensive,like heavy duty crank,MSD ignition,duel stage and progressive system of some sort.We like Nitrous Express,but to each his own.
